Drowning

air

An old friend,

Lost in the distant waves,

Never coming back.

Her head high

Walking further away

Not looking past.

The reassuring hand

Forever gone,

Nothing to grasp.

Once so close

Now an ocean apart –

All trust depleted.

I gasp for air;

Water gathers ‘round

Pounding my body.

Waves turn to walls

Separating us forever.

I’m alone.

Calmly it all ends

I give in,

Sinking to the bottom.

My legs take control,

No warning given,

They kick.

I see the light

Through the water

As I swim.

I see the surface.

With a deep breath,

I break through.

Inhaling as much

Oxygen and life

As possible.
